Revive!

Starting at the Beginning

after the rain
watch how
nature flourishes
and grows
after the rain
you can too

Unforeseen events jolt us and shake up our world. They force us to forge new, unfamiliar life paths. The particulars of my experience will differ from your own. Nevertheless, my hope is that these breadcrumbs will guide you as you formulate your own path.  Anything that speaks to you is yours to use in blazing your own trail to recovery.

Prior to surgery I led an ordinary life. I landed a full-time position at a non-profit organization with colleagues I adored and a mission I believed in. Hebrew Senior Life has a unique business model. It revolves around supporting each of their more than 2,000 employees. Every colleague is a cheerleader for everyone else. The culture is inclusive and the population diverse.

Our collective mission was caring for others and each other. We focused on the senior population and took a holistic approach tracking medical, social, culinary, and quality of life issues including art and education.

My work was centered on the NewBridge senior community and included supporting the administrative staff. I assisted with everyday concerns.

Advancement and stretching one’s skills were encouraged. It was a unique and wonderful workspace. I had truly found a niche. I was useful, fully engaged and thrilled to be there.

I had only one problem. Whenever I walked more than a few feet, I noticed I had difficulty sustaining my breath. My body was signaling that something was very wrong. I had no idea what. It seemed to come out of nowhere.

When my doctor identified the issue and I learned I would need surgery I was not overly concerned. I expected a short hospital stay followed by a few months of recovery at home.

Instead, what I got was a tsunami. It slammed Susan and me and caught us in its wake.
